Varnindra Dham, Patdi
Varnindra Dham (also known as Varnindradham or Patdi Swaminarayan Temple; Gujarati: વર્ણીન્દ્રધામ) is a prominent modern Swaminarayan temple complex located in Patdi village, Dasada taluka, Surendranagar district, Gujarat, India. Situated along the Viramgam-Gandhinagar Highway near Malvan Chokdi, about 3 km from Patdi town, 30 km from Viramgam and approximately 90 km from Ahmedabad, the temple is often called "Mini Poicha" due to its resemblance to the grand Nilkanthdham Swaminarayan Temple in Poicha near Rajpipla. Spanning over 15 acres (with some sources citing 2.5 acres for the core spiritual area), the complex combines devotional worship with family-friendly attractions and was inaugurated on 17 October 2017 (Dhanteras) by then Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Historical and Religious Importance
Varnindra Dham was constructed as an extension or "second part" of the Nilkanthdham complex in Poicha, under the auspices of Shri Swaminarayan Gurukul Surat (affiliated with Shree Vadtal Swaminarayan temple) and with support from the Rajkot Gurukul Sansthan. The project reflects the Swaminarayan Sampradaya's emphasis on devotion to Bhagwan Swaminarayan (also revered as Nilkanth Varni), education, and community welfare. The temple complex was envisioned to provide a spiritual oasis in the rural heartland of Saurashtra, accessible to devotees from Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, and surrounding areas. Dedicated primarily to Lord Swaminarayan in his Nilkanth form, the site promotes values of bhakti, moral living, and social harmony. It has quickly become a major pilgrimage and tourist destination since its opening, attracting thousands of visitors daily for darshan, satsangs, and family outings. The temple embodies the modern Swaminarayan tradition of blending spirituality with educational exhibitions and recreational facilities.
Architectural and Complex Features
The temple complex features a striking design with a golden-hued main shrine rising in a lotus-shaped base surrounded by a large water body. The architecture draws inspiration from traditional Hindu temple styles, featuring ornate carvings, multiple kalash-topped spires, and intricate detailing on the facade. The central garbhagriha houses the principal murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, with additional shrines and depictions of his 24 avatars, South Indian-style ritual practices (Rajopchar and Solsopchar), and a symbolic 108 Gaumukh (cow-head) dhara for ritual bathing.
Key attractions include:
- Pradarshani (Exhibition): A major highlight modeled after the Sahjanand Universe at Nilkanthdham Poicha, featuring multimedia displays on Bhagwan Swaminarayan's life, Bhagvadlila charitra, science exhibits, art gallery, mirror house, aquarium, horror house, family-life films, light-and-sound shows, and laser shows.
- Recreational Facilities: Gardens, boating, toy train rides, children's play areas, and a swimming pool.
- Other Amenities: Food stalls offering snacks, vegetarian meals, and community halls for satsangs and events.
- The evening illumination with thousands of colorful lights enhances the temple's grandeur, making it particularly attractive after sunset.
Present Status and Visitor Experience
Managed by the Swaminarayan Gurukul organizations, Varnindra Dham remains an active place of worship with daily aartis, abhishekam, and satsangs. Entry to the temple and darshan is free, though nominal charges apply for parking, the exhibition (around ₹150 for adults, ₹120 for children), swimming pool, toy train, and boating. The complex is open from early morning (around 5:30–6:30 AM) to evening (8:00–8:30 PM), with the exhibition typically running from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Visitors often describe a peaceful yet vibrant atmosphere, ideal for spiritual reflection, family picnics, and educational outings. The site includes guest accommodations (dharamshala-style rooms with AC/non-AC options), making it suitable for overnight stays. Varnindra Dham stands as a contemporary beacon of Swaminarayan devotion in Gujarat—combining magnificent temple architecture, immersive exhibitions, and family entertainment to create a harmonious spiritual and recreational destination that draws devotees and tourists alike.
